Smalti, tiles and Swarovski Crystals on MDF, 41 x 43 inch, 2014
The commission came from the collaboration between Opus and the Pontifical Committee for Culture and Social Sciences of the Vatican in Rome as part of the ‘Opus Vatican’ project. The project is looking to explore the various documents and archives within the Vatican, and so my brief was to bring a more visually stimulating creation to the project that would work well in providing the reader with an interesting and hopefully stimulating balance to the body of published work. I was privilege access as part of the research phase for the mosaic and ultimately I choose to look at the external architecture and the differing lights and tones at different moments in the day to give a different perspective to one of the most iconic buildings in the world.
President of the Pontifical Committee Father Xavier commented, ” I like the way the mosaic draws you in and offers a new and different way of looking at something I see every day of my life..I think Miss Wise has done a wonderful piece here and we are looking forwards to seeing it produced in the final Opus work.
